Old Man's Journey – a short adventure puzzle game from the Austrian studio Broken Rules, released in May 2017. An old man receives a letter, packs his bag, and leaves his house by the sea, and you help him reach his destination, literally reshaping the landscape to suit his steps. Hills that can be moved The entire mechanics are built on a single principle. The world is drawn in layers: nearby hills, distant slopes, rooftops, bridges. Any layer can be pulled up or down, and where its line intersects with the next, the old man's path appears. This is how he moves from one hill to another, crosses a river, or climbs to a village on a cliff. Later, flocks of sheep on the road, trains, and boats are added, all of which must also be taken into account. Mistakes are almost impossible; the puzzles are designed for relaxed play, not protracted searches for solutions. A story without words There's no dialogue in the game, and almost no text. During the journey, the old man sits down to rest, and short scenes from the past appear: his youth, his family, the sea, decisions he later regretted. These images gradually form a clear story about a man who missed something many years ago and is now setting out to correct it. The music for the game was composed by SCNTFC, and it largely sets the mood of each chapter. Hand drawn The landscapes are hand-drawn and animated frame-by-frame, so each scene resembles a book illustration: coastal towns, fields, a railway, a port.
