Layers of Fear – a first-person psychological horror game from Polish Bloober Team, published by Aspyr, released on February 16, 2016. This is the first game in the series: an artist returns to his home to finally complete the main picture of his life, but the house around him stops obeying logic. The artist and his masterpiece The unnamed hero was once a promising painter. His wife, a pianist, was his muse and model, and their daughter and Doberman named Popel lived in the house. After a fire in a department store, his wife was severely injured and could no longer play, the artist suffered mental problems, and his career went downhill. You gradually learn how the family came to this tragedy, from found objects and fragments of a letter that is pieced together. Now the hero is obsessed with his magnum opus, and his work requires much more than just paint. A house that changes behind your back The game is divided into six chapters. The mansion is dark and confusing, the rooms and corridors change; turn away: the door you entered through may lead to a completely different place. This is the basis for both puzzles and jump scares. To progress, you need to look for visual clues and collect materials for a painting. Critics have compared the game to PT, and the similarities are easy to spot. There are three endings, and which one you experience depends on how you play the game. Inheritance and other parts In August 2016, the Inheritance expansion was released, featuring the artist's daughter as the main character. She returns to her dilapidated childhood home with a flashlight, and the expansion has three different endings. Later, Layers of Fear 2 about filming a movie on an ocean liner, and in 2023 Layers of Fear Unreal Engine 5, which rebuilt the first and second parts into a single game with additional chapters.
