About the game
Soldier of Fortune – a first-person shooter from Raven Software, published by Activision, released on Windows in March 2000. The game runs on a modified Quake II engine and was once famous for its GHOUL damage system, which led to it being banned and curtailed in several countries. John Mullins and the stolen warheads The protagonist, John Mullins, is a mercenary working for an organization called "The Office." His partner is Aaron "Hawk" Parsons. The plot is simple: terrorists steal four nuclear warheads from a Russian warehouse and sell them to various countries. Behind the scheme is a neo-fascist group based in Germany, led by South African émigré Sergei Dekker. To retrieve the warheads, Mullins must travel halfway around the world: New York, Sudan, Siberia, Tokyo, Kosovo, Iraq, Uganda, and, finally, Germany. GHOUL System Each enemy has 26 hit zones, and the reaction to a hit depends on where the bullet lands. A shot to the arm, leg, or head feels different, and a shotgun blast at point-blank range is even more so. This level of violence was unusual in the early 2000s. In Germany, the game was listed as harmful to young people, and in British Columbia, it was classified as an adult film. The game itself has a password-protected setting that disables the blood, and a separate version with a lower level of violence was later released. Online play and sequels In addition to the campaign, there is a multiplayer mode with seven modes: Deathmatch, Realistic Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Arsenal, Assassination, Conquer the Bunker, and Control. Released in 2002 Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix was already on the Quake III: Team Arena engine, and in 2007 Payback from another studio.
