Scent of Greed – a short first-person psychological horror game from Yellow Basement Games. Currently available on Steam under the title Befriended Curse, the game was released on July 30, 2024. Summer job The protagonist, Jonathan, is finishing his psychology degree and accepts a summer job he can't refuse. Everything goes wrong: his car disappears, his employer vanishes, and Jonathan is left alone in a house in the middle of the woods, far from any nearby dwelling. With no help available, he's forced to figure out what's going on on his own. A little girl who lives nearby seems to have the answers. Meanwhile, an elderly woman wanders the woods, and he's not looking forward to seeing her again. Witches and Dark Fantasy The plot revolves around witches. The setting is quite realistic: an ordinary house, a forest, and everyday details. Mysticism and dark fantasy are woven into this imagery rather than replacing it, so the contrast is what makes it scary. There are jump scares, but they're few and far between, and they're carefully placed to avoid becoming a cliché. The developers specifically warn about dark scenes: violence, corpses, and the theme of suicide, so the game is intended for a mature audience. One evening in the forest It's a walking simulator: you explore a house and its surroundings, piece by piece piecing together what happened there. The story is linear, and the game takes about an hour and a half to complete, making it easy to complete in a single evening.
