Railroad Tycoon 2 – a railroad-themed economic strategy game from PopTop Software, released in the fall of 1998. The author and programmer was Phil Steinmeier. In 1998, the game was named the best strategy game of the year, and by 2001, the PC version alone had sold over one and a half million copies. Rails, stations, cargo You lay tracks, build stations, and operate trains carrying passengers and freight. Income depends on distance, demand, cargo type, and the state of the economy, while costs include fuel, locomotive and track maintenance, and overhead. Industries on the map produce and process raw materials: a steel mill, for example, makes steel from coal and iron ore. Linking these chains with lines significantly increases profits. Locomotives vary in speed, fuel, cargo preference, and how well they handle grades. They break down, and a derailment can destroy both the train and the cargo. Exchange and competitors The second half of the game takes place on the stock exchange. The company issues bonds and shares, buys back its own securities, pays dividends, and can acquire a rival or go bankrupt. The economy cycles through five states, from boom to bust, and these influence both shipping and stock prices. The 18-mission campaign covers North America, Europe, and the rest of the world. Each mission has three difficulty levels and three objectives, awarding a bronze, silver, or gold medal. Scenarios and differences from the third part In addition to the campaign, there are separate scenarios on real and fictional maps, some with scripted events, and any of them can be launched in sandbox mode. There's also a map editor. The map is 2D, with an angled view, whereas Railroad Tycoon 3 switched to full 3D in 2003.
