About the game

Once a Pawn a King is a turn-based roguelike strategy game that takes chess as its foundation and then ruthlessly breaks its traditional rules. The White King has seized power, the Black King has been captured, and the once-unbroken board has become a fractured kingdom. Instead of a familiar game, you'll embark on a perilous journey through the castle, where every victory opens new opportunities, and every mistake costs your entire party dearly. Not a party, but a real battle Pawns, knights, rooks, bishops, and other pieces here don't all look alike. Each plays its own role, gains unique abilities, and gradually becomes an important part of the overall tactics. New allies and reinforcements are encountered along the way, so the army's composition is constantly changing. Sometimes, a single successful discovery completely upends the usual playstyle and forces a new perspective on the capabilities of the entire squad. There's no attempt to test your knowledge of openings or force you to recall chess combinations. It's much more important to understand the strengths of your pieces, use them wisely, and promptly change tactics when the situation gets out of control. This makes the game feel like a standalone strategy game with a chess-like feel, rather than just another digital version of a classic board game. Features of the game An unusual strategy game inspired by classical chess. A squad of figures with different roles and abilities. Magical enhancements and flexible customization of your tactics. High replayability thanks to constantly changing events.
