About the game
LETHE: Broken memories – a story-driven puzzle game with platformer elements from the small studio Cuatro Monos Games. The action takes place inside the mind of Alan Zane, a loving husband and father who is beginning to develop Alzheimer's disease. Disease through the eyes of a patient Dementia is usually described by relatives. Here, it's the opposite: you find yourself inside Alan's mind and see the world as he does. Memory shatters, events repeat themselves, and the disease itself gradually erodes familiar space. The further the story progresses, the more severe the symptoms become and the more difficult it becomes to understand what's happening around you. The main threat here isn't an enemy with a gun, but oblivion, which in the game takes the form of a monster. Feelings as mechanics The authors translated the patient's experiences into game rules. The fear of getting lost and not recognizing the place. Rooms where things are in the wrong place. Loved ones whose patience is running out. Exploration that suddenly becomes terrifying and triggers a panic attack. All of this is solved through puzzles, not dexterity: quick reflexes and precise jumps are not required, there is no need to rush. Through episodes from the past, Alan's story gradually emerges, and with it, the answer to the question of what was most important in his life. What is the game really about? The key idea is expressed in one dialogue: Alan's family asks him if he knows who they are. He replies that he doesn't remember, but knows he loves them very much. The game is quiet, without action or chases, and is best played slowly. It shares only the title with Aery - Broken Memories, which is also available on the website: one is about a bird flying through beautiful worlds, while the other is about puzzles about illness.
