Inside the Backrooms – a co-op horror game based on the popular creepypasta story Backstage from MrFatcat, released on Steam in Early Access on June 20, 2022. You can play solo or with up to four players online, and the goal is simple: escape the endless yellow rooms alive. Five levels of Backstage The first thing you see are monotonous rooms with old, dirty carpeting and pale yellow walls. Things get worse from there. The game has five main levels, each larger and more challenging than the last, with its own puzzles and mechanics. There are two secret mini-levels that lead to a hidden ending. The puzzles range from simple to complex, and the solutions vary from game to game, so looking up the answer online isn't an option. Six Essences and Anxiety The levels are inhabited by six entities from the original creepypasta. Each attacks and manifests itself differently, and you first need to figure out which one you've encountered and how to escape it. If you encounter several at once, your chances are slim. When you see an entity, anxiety increases: fear effects appear and vision is impaired. Pills relieve anxiety, almond water heals, a flashlight illuminates dark areas, and a hazmat suit allows you to pass through areas contaminated with radiation. Stamina is limited, so running at every sound won't do. The voice gives out Co-op features proximity voice chat: you can only hear those nearby, and long-distance communication requires a radio. Some entities can also hear your conversations, so discussing your plan out loud is a bad idea. Your inventory is limited, and you can only respawn three times. The game will be updated over time: the developers have promised new entities, levels, and procedural generation.
