Fall of Light – a dark, top-down action RPG from RuneHeads, released on September 28, 2017, with support from 1C Company (now published by Fulqrum Publishing). The creators openly cite Dark Souls and ICO as inspirations: the former's combat, the latter's story about a companion who must be guided to her goal. Father and daughter It was the Fourteenth Age, when the darkness driven back by Lucia at the beginning of time had returned to the world. The protagonist, Nyx, was no longer young, his best years behind him. His daughter, Aether, the only source of light in this land, travels with him. The goal is simple and difficult: guide her to the last place on Earth where light still abides. Aether must be protected at all costs, for only she can open the way forward. The plot is told sparingly; much must be pieced together from fragments of legends and conversations with unusual encounters. Twenty fighting stances Combat here is cautious: defense, parrying, and timing matter more than frequency of attacks. The arsenal includes ten melee and ranged weapon classes, and a whopping twenty stances, including two-handed wielding and dual-wielding. Nyx faces off against Shadows, dark warriors, and dungeon monsters. The controls are designed with Dark Souls fans in mind, and the developers strongly recommend playing with a gamepad. Surface, temples and hiding places The path leads through a dark open world on the surface, winding dungeons, and abandoned temples where the emissaries of Darkness have taken refuge. In the temples, the hero gains special abilities, and traps, puzzles, and secrets are scattered throughout.
