You can reduce speed with counter thrust, drift with engines disabled, use maneuvering systems to evade fire, and carefully dock with stations or derelict vessels. Even cargo in the hold affects the ship's behavior, making it heavier and less maneuverable during flight. In space, you constantly have to choose between risk and reward. Some hunt pirates and fulfill contracts, while others search for abandoned ships, smugglers' caches, and anomalies containing valuable resources. After a battle, you can dock with a disabled vessel and salvage all the valuables from its compartments.
