Asteroids and Aliens – a top-down arcade space shooter from independent developer JBJon, released on February 24, 2025. It's a tribute to the classic Asteroids from the late 1970s, but with missions, rescuing people, and a more serious set of weapons. The ship looks like it did in 1979. The retro rocket controls almost identically to the original arcade game: 360-degree rotation, thrust whose strength depends on how long you hold the button down, and you can also reverse and shoot behind your back. Keyboard controls are used, and button prompts are available in the main menu. The first few levels are leisurely, but then the pace picks up, requiring serious maneuvering between flying rocks and aliens. Twenty levels and a machine part There are 20 levels in total and a separate final stage. Each has its own set of objectives: destroy asteroids, rescue people, destroy aliens. Furthermore, a single part of a mysterious machine is hidden in the level, and it must be found. Once all of this is accomplished, the gates to the next level open. The placement of enemies, items, and the part is random each time, so memorizing the route won't help. Progress is saved at checkpoints, and you can continue from the last one found. What's in the arsenal Bullets and missiles are endless. The laser is limited, but quickly clears the asteroid belt. The nuclear EMP pulse hits all enemies on screen, and smart bombs automatically find their target, although they don't work against everyone. Limited weapons are best saved for tough situations.
