Ascent of Ashes – a post-apocalyptic colony simulator from Vivid Storm Interactive, in early access since July 25, 2025. The studio was founded by the creators of Combat Extended, a popular RimWorld mod, and their passion for a detailed combat system is immediately evident in the game. Base among the ruins The world here is randomly generated, with several biomes and plenty of places to explore. You gather a group of survivors and build them a home: people need a place to rest between expeditions and share stories. At the base, they grow crops, tame alien creatures, adapt found equipment, and fortify the walls against raids. Each survivor has their own motivations. Strong people must not only be found and persuaded to join, but also kept happy, and the list of problems in the colony is growing faster than expected. A fight where a wound decides everything Battles take place in real time, allowing you to operate stealthily and outflank enemies. Damage and health are calculated in detail, so even a non-fatal wound can take a soldier out of the fight. Suppressing fire pins the enemy down, but it quickly depletes ammo, and you might run out in the next encounter. Enemies behave differently: disorderly raiders fight completely differently from the trained soldiers of the Remnant faction. Machines and Early Access The main thing that sets the game apart from other colony games is its transport. Vehicles can be repaired and driven, which changes how you navigate the large map. The engine was written from scratch and is moddable. The game currently has between 10 and 20 hours of content, with plans for city maps, mechs, faction diplomacy, and a final scenario.
