Abyss of Kings – a first-person action RPG set in dark fantasy, inspired by the King's Field series. It's being developed by Star Banner Games, essentially a single developer with the help of a composer and friends, and published by Spelkollektivet. A Steam release is planned for 2027. Falling into a rift It all begins with the hero falling into a mountain crevasse and finding himself in a vast cave system. There's no way back, only downward. Entire structures, buried deep underground, are hidden in the darkness, along with ruins and treasures. At first, it seems as if no one lives here, but then glowing eyes begin to peer out from the darkness at the hero. Some creatures can be spoken to, and these conversations gradually reveal the dungeon's secrets. Live chess The main difference from other games in the genre is the enemies. The main enemies here are sentient chess pieces, with over 45 different types. They advance quickly, appearing in different arenas and formations, and their tactics and magic evolve over time. Against them, the hero has a sword, a crossbow, and a magical amulet. Besides the chess pieces, the caves also contain other threats, including bosses. Steam users compare the game to Dark Souls and note its high difficulty. Rings and spells As you descend, you'll find magic rings. These enhance attacks and alter weapon behavior, and combining them creates powerful spells, allowing you to customize any weapon to your style. The world is semi-linear, each level is handcrafted, with many secrets and multiple endings. The pixel art style and music by composer Narbaiz set a dark tone.
